Oct 24, 2022 | Relocating to Panama, Retiring in Panama

Looking to get your Panama residency in the near future? You’re not alone. There are many reasons why someone might want to become a permanent resident of Panama. Maybe you’re looking for a new start in a beautiful and welcoming country. Or maybe you’re interested in taking advantage of Panama’s thriving economy and diverse opportunities. Whatever your reason, becoming a permanent resident of Panama is an exciting process! In this blog post, we will outline everything you need to know about gaining your Panama residency.

Benefits of Panama Residency

There are many benefits to Panama residency, and each has its own appeal, depending on your needs and budget. Perhaps the most appealing benefit is that Panama offers a very attractive tax regime for its residents. Panama is one of the few countries in the world that does not tax foreign-earned income. This means that if you are a resident of Panama and you earn money from outside of Panama, you will not be taxed on that income. Panama also has a number of tax-free zones that offer benefits and incentives for businesses and individuals alike and has become a go-to destination for retirees as well.

Another benefit of Panama residency is the country’s impressive infrastructure. Panama has some of the best roads, bridges, and ports in all Central America. And with a new metro system in place, with more lines currently under construction, getting around Panama City is easier than ever. Panama is also known for its amazing weather. Located in the tropics, Panama enjoys year-round warmth and sunshine, making it a perfect place to live and work. And with stunning beaches, mountains, and rainforests all within easy reach, Panama really does have something for everyone.

Requirements for Panama Residency

In order to get your permanent residency in Panama, there are a number of requirements you will need to meet. Perhaps the most important requirement is that you must have a valid passport. Panama does not offer visa-free travel for holders of passports from all countries, so it is important to check with your nearest Panama embassy or consulate to find out if you need a visa to enter Panama as a tourist. If you do need a visa, there are a number of different types available, depending on your purpose for travel. We highly recommend traveling to Panama as a tourist a few times before making the long-term commitment to become a permanent resident.

If you are planning to apply for Panama residency, you will also need to show proof of financial solvency. Panama requires that all applicants for residency have a minimum monthly income of $500, and we recommend having at least $2,000 in monthly income to cover all your expenses. Panama is a relatively affordable country to live in, but it is still important to have enough money to cover your basic needs. You will also need to show proof of health insurance, as Panama does not have the same public healthcare that many other countries do. Private healthcare in Panama is excellent, but it can be expensive if you don’t have insurance.

Panama residency is also only granted to those who can provide a clean criminal record. Panama is very strict about this requirement, and even a minor offense can result in your application being denied. If you have any doubts about your criminal history, we recommend consulting with a lawyer in your home country before beginning the residency application process. Lastly, Panama requires that all applicants for residency have a Panama bank account. This is easily done by opening an account with a Panama-based bank, and most banks will require that you show proof of your income and Panama residency application before they will open an account for you.

The Panama Residency Application Process

The first step in applying for Panama residency is to choose the visa that best suits your needs. As we mentioned, there are a number of different types of Panama visas available, and the one you choose will depend on your reason for wanting to become a resident. The current visas available to foreigners in Panama are :

Tourist Visa: This visa is for those who want to visit Panama for tourism purposes only. It is valid for up to 180 days and can be renewed once for an additional 180 days. This is not a permanent residency visa, however many people who choose to relocate to Panama start as long-term tourists.

Professional Visa: This visa is for those who want to work in Panama. It is valid up to 1 year and can be renewed annually.

Student Visa: This visa is for those who want to study in Panama. It is valid for the length of your studies, up to 3 years.

Retirement (Pensioner) Visa: The Panama retirement visa is for those who are retired and/or receive a pension from their home country. It requires that you have a monthly income of at least $1,000 and is valid for up to 2 years. It can be renewed every 2 years.

Investor Visa: This visa is for those who want to invest in Panama. It requires an investment of at least $160,000 and is valid for up to 5 years.

Agricultural Visa: This visa is for those who want to invest in Panama’s agricultural sector. It requires an investment of at least $60,000 and is valid for up to 2 years.

The next step in the Panama residency application process is to gather all the required documents. These include a completed Panama residency application form, a copy of your passport, two recent passport photographs, a police certificate from your home country, proof of income, proof of health insurance, and a Panama bank statement. Once you have all the required documents, you will need to submit them to the Panama Immigration Department. The Panama residency application process can take some time and patience, so it’s important to get started early and have the right type of help.
