Internet.org App Debuts in Panama

Mark Zuckerberg made headlines this week in Panama, as the Facebook mogul announced the launch of his new “internet.org” project in Panama. The project is currently only available for Digicel customers, and brings free mobile data access for limited sites that the company has set up in conjunction with the Panamanian Gov.

Air France to Increase Capacity and Comfort to Panama City

With both business and tourism traffic increasing in Panama from Europe, it’s only natural that airlines begin to ramp up flights to the region. This past week, Air France announced it would increase flight frequency, and improve its fleet for direct flights from Europe to Panama City.

“This move upmarket of our products and services, and our increasing capacity, allow us to meet our customers’ requirements as closely as possible and demonstrates our ambition to increase our presence in Panama and in the Central America region”, stated Zoran Jelkic, SVP Caribbean Indian Ocean and Latin America Air France-KLM.

Complementing KLM’s daily service on departure from Amsterdam-Schiphol, 13 weekly frequencies will be operated by Air France-KLM to Panama City this winter. Moreover, thanks to Copa Airlines’ Americas hub at Panama City-Tocumen airport, the Group’s customers benefit from a vast choice of connections notably to the Caribbean, Columbia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, Peru and El Salvador.

Panama Canal Expansion Over 90% Complete

2015 has been a huge year of accomplishments for the Panama Canal Expansion project. After delays in 2014 hampered the original schedule, the Canal is moving fast, and according to officials, just over 90% complete as of this week.

Work on the third set of locks, said to be the project’s most complex portion, is now focused on electro-mechanical installation that will take the project into its final stage.

The expansion will see the installation of 16rolling gates into the lock heads, as well as the installation of 152 valves that will move the water through the system. The expansion is also said to feature “water-saving basins”, which will save an estimated 7 percent water usage in operations compared to the current locks.
