Luxury Resorts Are Booming Along Panama’s Coast.
After a five-year-long overhaul—which brought nine villas, 1,556 solar panels, and a water treatment plant—Islas Secas Reserve & Lodge soft-opened early this year. It will officially open in January 2019, with rooms starting at $1,000 per person a night, all inclusive.
Until his sudden death in 2008, Klein ran his version of the resort, which shares the name of the island chain, as a passion project. It was an exclusive, no-frills fishing lodge, with a handful of comfortable yurts scattered across its largest land mass, Isla Cavada. It was then purchased by American billionaire conservationist Louis Bacon, whose intention was to protect the marine ecosystem while developing the resort as a playground for high-end travelers. (The name Islas Secas, or “dry islands,” refers to the area’s extreme low tides, when the water level can drop more than 12 feet, exposing long stretches of sand.)

Panama ready to live up to their physical reputation against England.
Panama defender Harold Cummings has raised the prospect of a physical World Cup battle with England by warning them they will ‘play hard’ in Nizhny Novgorod on Sunday.
England boss Gareth Southgate has told his players about Panama’s rugged approach after the Central American minnows picked up five bookings in their tournament opener against Belgium.
Panama have developed a reputation as rough and physical opponents, and Southgate has instructed his players not to be intimidated as England seek to build on their opening World Cup victory against Tunisia.

Panama president Juan Carlos Varela: ‘We showed we can play football’.
The president of Panama spent Monday night watching England play football. Juan Carlos Varela, who signed an emergency decree declaring a public holiday the night the country qualified for the World Cup for the first time, was with the national team at their hotel by the Black Sea when Harry Kane scored.
Earlier, he had been in Sochi’s Fisht Stadium a kilometre away to see Panama make their debut against Belgium. And despite a 3-0 defeat Varela, hopping from foot to foot, kicking an imaginary ball as he relives a historic evening, says he is proud of his players. He also feels Panama’s hard game is now out of the way – even though it’s England next. He had been studying them after all.
